Sotogrande sits at the western end of the Costa del Sol, in the municipality of San Roque, where the Guadiaro river reaches the sea. It is a residential estate of villas, golf courses, polo fields and a marina, greener and quieter than Marbella.
It suits couples who want space rather than a busy resort: a beach club for the ceremony, a family villa for getting ready, or a church wedding followed by a long party in a garden.
Lauren & Arnaud said their vows at Trocadero, under an arch of flowers by the sea. The evening before, a rainbow appeared over the bay during their pre-wedding session on the beach.
Lucía & Javi married at Nuestra Señora de la Merced, Sotogrande’s pink-fronted church, with olive trees along the aisle. Their reception was at the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande: we took them onto the course for twenty minutes at sunset, and the party went on under a tent of fairy lights.
Our studio is in Estepona, about half an hour up the coast, so we know these roads well. Diego takes the photographs and Tamara usually makes the film, so your pictures and your film tell the same day in the same style.

A golf club from 1964, a short walk from the sea in Sotogrande. Lucía & Javier had their portraits on the course and their party under the palms.
Sotogrande’s parish church, white inside and out, with a short walk from the door to the cars. We photographed Lucía and Javier’s church wedding here in September 2023, and the moment the doors open onto the guests is worth planning for.
SO/ Sotogrande, by the Almenara golf course, lists weddings with gardens and in-house catering, and La Reserva Club has its own beach club and events team. Send us your shortlist and we’ll tell you what to ask each one about wind and timings.

May to October is the season. Summer is dry and warm, with highs around 29 °C in July and August, and evenings by the sea are fresher than inland.
Sotogrande is close to the Strait of Gibraltar, where two winds take turns. The levante blows from the east, warm and often hazy; the poniente comes from the west and brings clear skies. Either can be strong enough to move a veil or an arch, so we choose the most sheltered spot for the vows.
The sun sets at about 9:20 pm in mid-May, 9:40 pm in mid-June and July, 9:10 pm in mid-August, 8:30 pm in mid-September and 7:45 pm in mid-October, an hour earlier once the clocks change at the end of October. A ceremony two hours before sunset puts your portraits in the golden hour.
Dates to check: the International Polo Tournament fills Sotogrande from late July to the end of August (27 July to 29 August in 2026), and Valderrama hosts professional golf, such as LIV Golf Andalucía in early June 2026. Hotels and villas book up early in those weeks.
Gibraltar airport is about 25 minutes away, with direct flights from the UK. Málaga Airport is about 70 minutes by car on the AP-7, Jerez about 80 minutes and Seville around two hours.
Since July 2026 there are no routine checks at the land border with Gibraltar. Passport control now happens at Gibraltar airport itself, so guests still travel with their passports.
Sotogrande is spread out and most venues are a drive apart. Book a shuttle between the hotel, the church or beach and the reception, and agree pick-up points before the day.
Guests can stay at SO/ Sotogrande or in rented villas, and some prefer the marina for the evenings. For portraits we like the palm-lined avenues, the golf courses at sunset and the beach at Torreguadiaro, all a few minutes apart.
Yes. It is the closest airport to Sotogrande, about 25 minutes away, with direct flights from the UK. Málaga has more routes and is about 70 minutes by car.
Yes, and Lauren & Arnaud had their ceremony at Trocadero Sotogrande. A beach club makes it simple. On a public beach you usually need permission from the town hall and Spain’s coastal authority, and it is hard to get in high summer.
Some days, yes. Levante and poniente are part of life near the Strait, so we choose the most sheltered spot for the vows.
A civil wedding in Spain needs one of you to live here, so most couples from abroad sign at home and hold a symbolic ceremony. A Catholic wedding, like Lucía and Javi’s at La Merced, is another route; the paperwork starts at your home parish months ahead.
Often, but Sotogrande is close to Gibraltar airport, so we check the official ENAIRE map for your venue before we promise any aerial shots.
No. Sotogrande is half an hour from our studio, and there is no travel charge here.
